It’s OCTOBER and we are ready to recognize our Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of SEPTEMBER. We’ve gotten a late start to our Athlete-of-the-Month Process but we are happy to recognize some deserving GB Athletes! We need your help. Below you will find information on several of our FALL Athletes at Glen Burnie High School. Please read through them and decide which athlete you feel deserves to win the “SEPTEMBER Student-Athlete of the Month” award at GBHS. The winning athlete will receive an embroidered Under Armour Backpack and recognition on our upcoming “Athlete of the Month” board going up in the gym. The voting goes live at 9:00AM on Friday, October 13, 2017 and stays open until 12:01AM on Friday, October 20, 2017.
Here are your SEPTEMBER candidates:
Jada Smith- Cheerleading
Jada has been a member of the varsity team all four years. Jada is a captain on this varsity team and is a great role model to the underclassman. On the team, Jada uses her strengths to overcome her weaknesses and really shines at being a leader of this team. She is able to do all of this all while maintaining an impressive GPA. Jada has been a part of the team’s success making it to regionals, Glen Burnie’s first time placing 1st at a competition, and also was a part of the team’s first time to qualify for states since the early 1990s!
Emily Chen- Cross Country
This is Emily’s second year running cross-country. She has improved tremendously since last year. She is one of our most consistent and hardworking athletes. The coaching staff knows that they can count on her to run her best at every meet and practice. Her time of 23:40 this week was 4 minutes faster than her first race of the season! This shows that she has improved tremendously since the start of the season. It is also one of the top 10 fastest times ever for the girls’ cross-country team at Glen Burnie! She has the same dedication to her school work. Currently, she has straight A’s, perfect attendance, and hasn’t been late to any classes or practices!
Brooke McCormick- Girls Soccer
Brooke McCormick is averaging 15-20 saves per game for our Lady Gopher Soccer club. Brooke is returning to the goal for the first time since her freshman year of high school and now as a Junior, she is a starter on the Varsity team. Brooke is a great student in the classroom, taking almost all AP and Honors classes. Brooke has become a true leader on and off the field and the soccer staff feels that she is deserving of this award.
Alyssa Jenkins- Field Hockey
Alyssa stepped up and played goalie for the field hockey team at the beginning of the season, having between 20-34 saves in the first few games. She has transitioned onto the field: playing forward, assisting with goals and as a defender, helping get the ball up the field. She has really grown into an outstanding player. She communicates with her team and helps create a positive and warm environment for the ladies. She excels in school and she is very focused on her academics. The coaching staff has seen such an amazing change: from the girl who would never speak to a strong leader on and off our field!
David Kates- Football
David has been a starter on the football team for his entire career. He spends much of his time trying to get better but also pushing his teammates to make them the best version of themselves. Kates will often be the first finished in a sprint during practice or jumping up to play an offensive scout player to push the defense to give them a real look. Currently, Kates is the only player on the football team to score in every single game during the season. He sets a personal goal of 150-200 yards and 2 touchdowns each game and he works hard to achieve that goal. He is in the Top 5 in rushing yardage in Anne Arundel County and one of the most explosive weapons in the state of Maryland, even though he didn’t start at running back the first three weeks of the season. Kates is on pace to finish the season with over 1200 yards of total offense for the football team.
